Episode 61 - The Old Becomes New

Jason Horinger has a passion for repurposing old items. He’s parlayed this passion into the opening of a new store, Birchwood Supply Co., which will feature furniture and home decor items refurbished from vintage and discarded materials. Episode 59 - Big Betty the Food Truck

Chris and Liz welcome the owners of the Square Scullery food truck, which will hit the streets in early July, serving indie comfort food to Greater Akron. The mobile eatery, run by Highland Square residents Matt and Heather Ulichney, will be anchored by Betty, the 27-foot food truck that boasts a full-size kitchen. The business is a labor of love for the couple, who will serve only fresh food and are stepping up their customer experience game. Ryan and Cody have girlfriends (and new, fitting roles in Beauty and the Beast) and Liz shares info about this weekend’s Akron Farm and Flea kickoff at Musica, which will include live music, vintage, arts, crafts and farm produce. And speaking of farms, Chris shares his Amish heritage.

Episode 57 - A Coach for the Community

(Bonus episode) Liz and Chris are joined by Coach Fred Woods, a longtime staple at the Akron Area YMCA. As a basketball coach, Fred has helped mentor hundreds of young people and was, himself, the product of YMCA mentoring. Fred also discusses growing up in Akron and a new neighborhood project he’s undertaking, called Mobile Mentoring. This week, Ryan and Chris speak with Greg Milo, a local teacher, writer and community-minded Akronite, who discusses the many beyond-the-classroom experiences he offers his students, like Project Hope, a weekly outreach to the area homeless, and trips to Europe. He also talks about life as a working-class vegan and shares some of his favorite places in Akron.

Ep. 55 - Meeting with the Maestro

Christopher Wilkins, Music Director and Conductor of the Akron Symphony Orchestra, talks with Liz and Chris about this weekend’s performance of "Carmina burana," which will combine music and dance and feature collaborations with a number of local dance groups, like GroundWorks Dance Theater, Dance Institute, Ballet Excel Ohio and other young dancers from Northeast Ohio, as well as the Akron Symphony Chorus. Christopher also talks about how he shares his time between Akron and Boston and his own background in music. Oh, and Liza used to play the viola!
